WHAT IS A FOAM MATTRESS TOPPER

A foam mattress topper is a pad that is made up from an additional finishing layer of compressible material that is attached to the top surface of a mattress. The topper should be exactly the same size as the mattress upon which it sits in order for it to fit and work correctly.

Some new mattresses have a detachable foam mattress topper supplied with them, however you can add a mattress topper to any bed or mattress.

What does a topper do

Put simply, a foam mattress topper adds an extra layer of padding, and usually body contouring material, to an existing mattress.

This has the dual role of making the mattress more comfortable and enabling it to provide a higher level of support to the back, bones and muscles.

It also means that a cheaper mattress can be given an additional layer of supportive padding, and that a hard or overly firm, mattress can be made to feel softer and more compressible.

What is a mattress topper made from

A mattress topper can be viewed as a very thin mattress. As such it is composed of a filling, or multiple fillings, and covered and finished with a finely woven fabric called Ticking which is also used to cover mattresses.

There are many different material from which the mattress topper filling can be composed, but the most popular fillings are

Will a foam mattress topper improve my sleep and night time comfort

Toppers, and in particular foam mattress toppers filled with Latex or visco elastic memory foam, have a proven record of adding additional and beneficial sleeping properties to regular mattresses.

Memory and Latex foam mattress toppers not only feel soft, but they also shape themselves to the unique contours of the person (or people) who sleep on them. This means that they support the body in the most optimum of ways and ensure that the mattress topper supports the bodies weight evenly. This is seen as a preventative measure in avoiding sleeping pressure points on areas like the shoulders and hips.

Will a mattress topper work on any bed or mattress

In general terms a foam mattress topper will work with any standard mattress and they are particularly good with any spring or coil sprung mattress construction.

There are however two types of mattresses where adding a topper will fail to provide any benefit.

The first is where you have an old and badly worn mattress. No mattress topper can revive or put life back into a failing mattress. When this is the case the only option is to replace the existing mattress with a new one.

The second instance where a foam mattress topper will not provide any additional benefits is with expensive multilayered mattress constructions. These mattress types already incorporate a topping layer of foam or feathers and make the addition of a mattress topper redundant.
