FOAM MATTRESS TOPPER - Therapy topper

Whilst the majority of people who choose to buy a foam mattress topper do so in order to add an extra layer of comfort and support to their existing mattress, some buy it for a therapy.

This might sound a little bit odd, but some mattress toppers make it possible to add a therapeutic topping layer to a bed. They do so by including some kind of therapy within the mattress topper and the available therapies are increasing all the time.

What therapies are available?

Magnetic therapy

Probably the most popular therapy topper is one that uses magnetic therapy

Many people, including an increasing number within the medical profession, believe that magnetic forces can have an impact on the body and human health. Some take the view that this is general health, whilst others believe that it can be used to treat specific symptoms.

Magnetic therapy works by including a number of small magnets within the filler of the topper. These magnets cannot be felt by the person lying on the topper, but they create a consistent magnetic filed that it is claimed can help restful sleep, ease insomnia, and offer relief from headaches and other pains and discomforts.

How effective this kind of magnetic therapy can be is open to debate, but magnetic mattress toppers have become popular.

Aroma therapy topper

Aroma therapy has long been popular and infusing a mattress topper with essential oils enables an aroma to be passed to anyone sleeping on it over the night time period.

These days very few people question the effectiveness of aroma therapy when it comes to helping people to relax and achieve a state of restfulness and, for this reason, aroma toppers have started to appear online and in stores.

Which aroma to select is a matter of personal preference, however certain essential oils have a reputation for creating certain mental states and a number can assist in helping people towards a sleeping state.

Heat therapy

Mattress toppers that can be thermostatically heated (like the old electric blankets) not only keep the bed warm on a cool night, they can also promote health.

Getting cold in bed is neither conducive to sleep, nor does it allow the body to recover from the exertions of the day. Keeping the mattress surface at a consistent warm temperature can solve this by encouraging sleep and keeping the muscles warm.

Pressure relief therapy topper

Many foam toppers that use visco elastic memory foam will claim to offer pressure therapy relief.

This is of course exactly what a memory foam topper should do by providing a more floating and balanced level of support than a cheap spring or standard foam mattress. However, in order for this to be the case the topper really needs to be at least 65mm, or 2 ½ inches, in thickness. A lesser thickness topper will not have the depth of memory foam for the true properties of this material to be realised.

A good memory foam topper will shape itself to the contours of the person (or people) sleeping on it by both weight and heat reaction. Toppers that do this can often come under names like ortho topper, reflex topper, and reaction topper etc, but they all do essentially the same thing.

If you decide to buy one of the therapeutic mattress toppers, assure yourself that any claims made for it are true (or at least satisfy your interest) before you buy.
