WHY YOU MIGHT WANT A FOAM MATTRESS TOPPER
There are a number of reasons that might motivate you to consider buying a foam mattress topper.
And, if your overall goal is to get a softer, healthier and more comfortable sleeping surface, you should not be disappointed.
Even so, mattress toppers cannot perform miracles, so read the two lists below to ensure that you have the right expectations for your mattress topper before you buy it.
The first list represents the most common and valid choices for buying a foam based mattress topper, whilst the second list represents some over expectations and common myths that will not usually be achieved.
The valid reasons for buying a mattress topper
- To add an extra level of luxury and comfort to your existing mattress.
- To turn a hard or firm mattress into a softer and more spongy one.
- To take advantage of one of the new mattress padding materials like visco elastic memory foam or Latex foam.
- To add a layer of duck or goose down, or organic wool to the top of your existing mattress sleeping surface.
- To provide profiled body contouring along with balanced support of the bodies major joints like the spine, shoulders and hips.
- To provide a sleeping surface that works with and is sympathetic to, the bodies shape, weight and movements during sleep.
- To benefit from a cooler sleeping material like Latex foam, or a warmer sleeping material like memory foam.
The wrong reasons for buying a mattress topper
- To perk-up, revitalise, or repair the performance of an old, damaged or worn out mattress. (A mattress topper cannot achieve the impossible.)
- To convert a regular budget mattress into a high performance multi composite mattress at several times the value. (A mattress topper will improve the quality of the sleeping surface, but a cheap mattress and a cheap topper do not equal an expensive mattress.)
- To increase the life span of an existing mattress. (A good mattress topper, fitted to a mattress that is in good condition, may extend its life expectancy slightly, but this is not a good reason for buying a mattress topper.)
The best approach to buying a mattress topper is to see it as an extra layer of comfort and luxury rather than a replacement for, or upgrading of, a poor quality or failing mattress.
